SUSTAINABILITY IS A KEY ASSET
FOR METRA THAT IS REALISED THROUGH
THE PRODUCTION OF METRA RE.AL.E GREEN ALLOYS

METRA RE.AL.E is the new range of low carbon alloys produced by METRA at its Brescia headquarters.

The chosen name, with its contemporary and immediate flavour, combines the prefix ‘RE’ (recycle) with the suffix ‘AL’ (aluminium) and the letter ‘E’ (extrusion).

The sum of the syllables recreates the word “reale” (real), meaning authentic, true, underlining METRA’s ability and commitment to create real and concrete answers to the new needs of sustainability. Real is also the circularity of METRA’s production:
extrusion, waste recovery, melting and production of new alloys.

The main material of this process is aluminium, which with its features, durability, 100% recyclability, lightness and resistance, becomes the ideal material to face the challenges of today and tomorrow.
The combination of all its qualities makes it unique in terms of environmental performance.

METRA’s continuous, high-performance research enables the development of technologies for recovering aluminium. Its infinite recyclability at the same time fulfils the stringent need to protect the use of virgin raw materials and the reduction of emissions into the atmosphere. METRA’s development of increasingly innovative technologies constantly raises the circular economy standards of the company’s production.

The low-carbon alloys produced by METRA show very high rates of use of recycled aluminium. The extrusion process adopted, boasts very high standards in terms of energy saving thanks to the almost exclusive use of natural fuels (methane). METRA, in the five main categories of billets produced, also reaches peaks of 100% utilisation of recycled aluminium. These percentages are in the process of being certified by bodies such as: IMCQ and BREEAM. Finally, the company’s aluminium alloys average less than 1.66 kg of carbon dioxide emissions produced per kg of aluminium.

METRA is engaged in a programme of progressive improvement of its environmental targets. In the current three-year period, in fact, a target has been fixed to further reduce GHG emissions by 2%, as a result of a pressing programme of interventions. This ambitious goal is the synthesis of the installation of photovoltaic cells, LED lighting, heat exchangers and inverters, and the replacement of previous-generation motors. These investments in optimisation are based on an articulated system of best practices adopted by all METRA employees who guard their compliance and objectives.

METRA is in the process of certifying the Carbon Footprint analysis: a complete inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions according to UNI EN ISO 14067 standards, which establish that it takes into account both aspects directly related to its own production, and indirect aspects, generated by upstream and downstream activities. This detailed analysis, which is constantly updated, allows us not only to maintain a relationship of total internal transparency, but also to string together a pact of transparency with the territories and populations that receive our production, with whom we can plan projects to improve air quality.

METRA’s production lines for the building division contribute directly to the energy savings achieved by the customer, as well as to his comfort and safety. The output (realised by the METRA Building division), in fact, is HES (High Energy Saving) certified. A guarantee that the products boast very high standards of thermal and acoustic insulation.

METRA’s aluminium production enjoys ISO 14001 certification, which testifies to METRA’s commitment to adopting an effective environmental management system to support the company’s sustainability objectives, based on a guaranteed balance between environment, society and economy. METRA is also a member of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). A global non-profit organisation that certifies the standards of aluminium industries in terms of environmental commitment and production sustainability. On the other hand, EPD certification, certifies the consumption of resources and impacts on the environment at various stages of the product life cycle.

For METRA, people and their well-being are truly at the centre. And not only because of the numerous investments in the environmental field that the company has been making for a long time. People and their rights are, in fact, ratified within the framework of an Organisation, Management and Control Model – Code of Ethics and Conduct, drafted on the guidelines of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

METRA also combines systemic actions with an accurate research for constant improvements, in the full awareness that, in order to achieve such important objectives, the contribution of everyone and on every level is necessary. A zero-waste philosophy guides all company departments, which are equipped with water dispensers, separate waste collection and electric car charging stations. The safety of personnel is placed at the heart of the complete decontamination of every surface containing asbestos, and green energy propelled by the installation of electric car charging stations.
